to all participants for submitting their photos and sharing their climate change stories!
While we were walking through the streets downtown, thick smoke covered the sky. My friend Khadim shouted "look, Babacar a fire ahead". "No! It's a factory that makes cement". A factory in the heart of the city polluting the atmosphere with dirt, which can make people sick. "You are right, Babacar. I heard the community have been complaining to the Hygiene Services and soon the factory will move out".
The products they use are harmful to people's health, to the environment (flora and wildlife), and to the aesthetic of the environment (neighbouring houses are filled with dust and smoke). In fact, the global warming is partly caused by people. The world population is growing and growing, yet people haven't changed their habits yet. I was frightened by the flames and smoke of the fire in the air. It is dangerous not only to the people's health but also the flames could spread and cause even greater catastrophes.
There are changes in the ozone layer and changes in the world's climate. Consequently, the River Senegal that flows through Saint-Louis is getting drier and drier and the beauty of the island of Saint-Louis is gradually getting lost. Because of fish scarcity, sea food is now expensive. We must protect the environment and the green squares in our neighbourhood. It's very important to plant trees to help the atmosphere breathe; otherwise the people will stifle. Thanks to our Connecting Classrooms programme in Saint-Louis, I have planted some trees, hoping they will grow to change our environment.
