Managing waste is a problem, with which the Senegalese Department of the Environment is confronted. There is an increasing amount of garbage in every corner of the city. People do not hesitate to throw away products they have used, even though some of them, such as plastic and rubber products (bottles, bags, tires...) could be reused or recycled.
To get rid of all of this waste, people are inclined to burn it. In combustion the waste releases generally toxic vapours. The increase in gas emission causes greenhouse effects in the atmosphere, which results in higher temperatures. These gases are especially related to the emission of carbon dioxides, diazotizes and steam. The damaging of the ozone layer, deforestation, desertification and drought are some of the effects caused by these emissions.
To decrease generated waste the population, we should learn how to deal with our waste products, we should create the infrastructure to handle it, we should recycle rubber and plastic products and we should make compost and fertilizers from biodegradable waste.
Knowing all that, we are eager to participate in the safeguarding of our environment. We have a proverb that says: "The land was not given to us by our parents, but it was lent to us by our children". This is why we decided to organize a general cleaning and tree planting day, as a part of the British Council's Connecting Classrooms programme.
