José Israel studies environmental engineering at the Instituto Technológica de Sonora (ITSON). In the past he has worked as an ecological coordinator at his high school.
In the future he would like to work on finding new solutions to mitigate climate change and to achieve sustainable development. He is a Climate Champion in the British Council's International Climate Champions programme.
The whole of Mexico has been affected by climate change, both economically and socially. In the north-west, where I live, there is often a shortage of water. Even reservoir supplies are unreliable, which has a knock-on effect on agriculture - one of the region's most important economic sectors. Closer to home, the lack of water has also affected my family's food production and our economic well-being.
In previous years, the high temperatures led to water supplies being switched off completely in some cities. For example, three years ago, the city of Hermosillo (the capital of the state of Sonora) had to resort to purifying salt water from the Gulf of California.
